On croit que le curling a commence à Buckingham vers les années 1855-1857. L’annuaire du Club de Curling Royal  Calédonien de                        1857 démontre le Club de Curling de Buckingham avec 20 membres, Ce premier Club s’est dissous en 1857.

Curling started it is believed in Buckingham about 1855 to 1857. The Royal Caledonian Curling Club “Annual” for 1857

shows Buckingham Curling Club with a membership of 20. This first club disbanded in 1867.

The second club in 1894 was in a lean-to building on the south side of the Whaleback Skating rink at the rear of the Leger Photo Studio. No records of this second club are available and apparently disbanded shortly after the turn of the  century.

The third B.C.C. formed in the fall of 1918 after Maclaren company offered to build a curling rink and lease it at a nominal fee

provided towns-people would support such a venture. On November 22, 1918 a public meeting held at the Town Hall with 40

persons present, accepted the Maclaren offer. Membership rose to 75 the first year with curling commencing January 1, 1919

In 1921, Messrs Albert MacLaren and Norman F. Wilson of Rockland, donated a MacLaren-Wilson Cup to be played for between the two clubs in a series of 16 games with four rinks each side. The Club winning it three years in succession becoming the absolute owners. Buckingham did this.

A feature of the finals in Rockland on March 19, 1921, was the various ways Buckingham took to get to the ice. Four players went by train to Ottawa thence by train to Rockland and returned home by walking on the ice across the Ottawa River and Lochaber Bay to a car waiting for them on the Québec side. Four others drove to Lochaber and walked across the Bay and River on foot, returning the same way. Four others of the players motored via Ottawa to Rockland and returned the same way a distance of 95 miles in all. Intermittent down-pours of rain fell throughout the evening, which made it hard going for the three groups. The motoring party endeavored to pass a team and sleigh on the road between Ottawa and Rockland but were unable to do so. Investigation showed a man lying on the front seat of the sleigh with the driving lines tied around his neck and he was “dead to the world”. The horses were guided off the road, the car driven past, and then the horses taken back to the road and started on their homeward way with the lines still about the driver’s neck.

At the supper after the game our men joked Norman Wilson about the lack of liquid refreshments and said that apparently a farmer could get it when he seemed unable to do so.

The 1946-47 season was very short on account of mild weather during the winter. The ice was gone before we finishes our schedule. Maybe that was one of the reasons that decided the directors of the Men’s club to start talking about artificial ice.

However 1946-1947 was a very special season; the ladies brought home the Coronation Trophy and the Tweedsmuir Trophy, the two major competitions of the Ladies Curling Association. The Coronation rink was: Eglantine Gauthier (Skip), Marcelle Gauthier, Mrs. R. M. Kenny and Mrs. H. W. Cressy. And for the Tweedsmuir the personnel of the

two finks was: Eglantine Gauthier (Skip), Marcelle Gauthier, Ida Cressy and Velma Wallingford; and Mabel Morrison (Skip), Bea Johnson, Agnes Bell and Bertha Moran. They defeated rinks from the Lachute Curling Club.

May I mention here that every time the ladies brought home either the coronation Trophy or the Tweedsmuir Trophy, the ladies of the Club always had a fancy tea party in honor of the winners. The first time the ladies brought home the Coronation Trophy, the men’s club joined the ladies and met the winners at the train in Masson and paraded them to the Curling Club in Buckingham.
